🔮

Doshas are identified through the effects and positioning of planets in a person's horoscope. A detailed study of these doshas can help you understand the ups and downs of life and prepare for them in advance. Left unaddressed, the effects of a dosha can continue to influence a person's life for a long time.

What Are the Different Types of Doshas in Astrology?

Consulting an experienced astrologer can help identify the specific dosha present and the appropriate remedies to address it — from Kaal Sarp Dosh and Mangal Dosh to Pitra Dosh, Nadi Dosha, Rajju Dosha, Rahu Dosha, Bhakoot Dosha, and Guru Chandal Dosha.

Types of Dosha in Astrology

Kaal Sarp Dosh

When all nine planets in a horoscope fall between Rahu and Ketu, it is known as Kaal Sarp Dosh — considered one of the more challenging doshas in Vedic astrology. While most effects are seen as difficult, some positions can bring favorable results too. A dedicated puja is typically recommended along with personalized guidance.

Kuja Dosha (Mangal Dosh)

When Mars is placed in the 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house from the ascendant, Moon, or Venus, it is referred to as Kuja Dosh — also known as Mangal Dosh, Manglik Dosh, or Bhom Dosh. This dosha is traditionally associated with challenges in married life if not addressed with the right remedies in time.

Pitra Dosh

"Pitra" refers to one's ancestors. In Vedic astrology, the Sun represents the father figure, and when positioned in the 9th house under malefic influence from Rahu, a person may experience Pitra Dosh — traditionally seen as a karmic debt linked to one's ancestors.

Nadi Dosha

Nadi Dosha is considered a serious factor in horoscope matching for marriage. Among the 36 compatibility points used in matchmaking (Ashtakoot), Nadi carries 8 points and is considered essential for marital harmony.

Rajju Dosha

Rajju Dosha is considered one of the more significant doshas affecting marital compatibility, particularly Madhyama Rajju Dosh. Marriage is generally not recommended when birth stars (Janam Nakshatras) of both partners fall into Vedha with each other, or belong to the same Rajju category.

Rahu Dosha

Rahu, though not physically visible like other planets, holds both positive and negative influence in Vedic astrology. When positioned in the 6th, 8th, or 12th house of a Kundli, it may bring a more difficult period — particularly during Rahu Mahadasha.

Bhakoot Dosha

Bhakoot Dosha can occur in three forms based on the distance between the Moon signs of the prospective bride and groom — known as Dwi-Dwadash Dosha, Navam-Pancham Dosha, or Shadashtak Dosha, depending on the specific positioning.

Guru Chandal Dosha

Guru Chandal Dosha forms when Jupiter combines with Rahu or Ketu in a natal chart. Since Jupiter represents wisdom and growth, this combination is often seen as challenging — though it can also bring favorable results in certain chart positions. Common effects include career and education-related challenges, job instability, financial difficulties, and friction with father or children. Remedies include puja to seek Jupiter's blessings, worshipping Lord Ganesha and Lord Vishnu, and Nirvana puja for Chandal Yoga.
